Begin with the clutter that you routinely see every day at your house. For example, organize your kitchen and family room before your decide to organize your hallway closet. Once you see how nice your results look, you will be motivated to work on the hidden areas throughout your home, such as closets, cabinets and drawers.

Give everything in your home a special place of its own. Find the proper home for all of your items. Then, your family will know exactly where to find them and where to put the items away each time they use them. For example, you can create one defined place in your house for storing library books. This will make it easy to find them when it is time to read or return them.

Set aside one basket for each family member for items they frequently bring in and out of the house, such as homework, school books or book bags.

Designate a specific basket on your desk or command center for incoming mail, bills, receipts and letters. This way everyone will know where these important items are when needed. You may want to have a shredder nearby, so you can shred appropriate items for security reasons while sorting through your mail everyday.

You may want to get rid of certain items in your house that you do not need or want anymore. For example, coupons that may have expired or magazines you might not get around to reading. All these material things take away from the space you could be using for items you actually do need and use on a regular basis.
